I'm eager, keen to learn and very passionate about embracing this meaningful career, by helping clients through their Recovery, using my own ‘Lived Experience’ of mental health conditions and my own ongoing mental health care treatment & recovery – utilising my skills, my knowledge and my life experiences — from my initial Military training & five-years Service and my years of public sector and NGO-based roles.  I'm also a Veteran, a Volunteer, a Student, a Family Member, and I'm a Spartan!   My 'Lived Experience' story includes my Military service, transition and psychiatric injuries from my Service.  My Recovery, so far, includes using CBT and strengths-based therapies, mindfulness approaches to physical activity-based therapy, using trauma-informed care & recovery Veteran services, maintaining a holistic outlook to health & wellbeing, retraining & re-skilling myself ('finding purpose' & passions), and, importantly, learning to “live well” & "do self-care".   When it comes to mental health issues, no one can ever truly understand or feel another person’s emotions or know exactly what someone else is going through in their struggles.  Mental Health Peer Workers / Peer Support Workers are well placed to understand the feelings and struggles faced by people with mental health issues and mental illness, because they have also been through the Recovery process themselves and often are still on their own Recovery Journey too.  Peer Workers come from a place of true understanding, a “lived experience” of how challenging mental health issues can be for someone.  Peer Workers can talk about Recovery with someone without stigma or shame and share their own story with others, that may well help another person’s own health and wellbeing improve substantially.  Peer Workers also meet Clients where they are at, walk alongside, taking “Positive Steps with You” together, and find out what is important to the Client, as a person.
