Toward this end I studied business on my own before earning an MBA and certification as a Project Management Professional.Prior to the MBA, I studied metallurgy, chemistry and physics of metals production processes. Authored "Carbon in Cast Irons" published in Foundry Management & Technology August & September 1996. The largest project I've undertaken was a turnaround at a local mineral processor where coal, coke and graphite were prepared for sale to the steel mills and foundries. Our team was able to nearly double sales in the first six years, establish a cost system and operations that allowed 9 consecutive years of profitability, a record that led the corporation. This all took place during the 1990s a period of decline in the metals industries. During this run we set and re-set records in weekly production,safety and quality several times. We were able to reduce the unit cost to produce over 12 years so it was lower in my last year than in my third. In addition, ISO 9002 registration was earned and the external cost of quality was reduced to almost zero. We turned around our adversarial relationship with our union, Teamsters 762 and negotiated 3 contracts over 10 years at 3%, which was below the average rate in PA. As VP & GM, my personal responsibilities included operational responsibility for the plant & office. Responsibility to refine the cost system was mine, and only myself and the President could set prices. After the first year we were profitable for the first time in years, and never looked back. I was responsible for the relationship with the union, which improved greatly. It would be a thrill to get back into a turn-around opportunity. In an effort to position myself for this, I returned to school for an MBA and eventually created Terrell Enterprises Inc. which bought and operated Best Quality Builders until the Great Recession killed the business in 2009.
