From a Teller with Senior Certificate to now an Assurance Consultant I have worked my way up and I have done and completed a Accounting Science Diploma from UNISA. I have been exposed to most of the operations of the branch environment, the business unit (Savings and Investments) operations and now the Auditing part of the the branch network. I am one of the Assurance Consultant at Absa Bank. The position entails testing the effectiveness of controls to determine if the they are operating effectively as intended. The exposure in the 10 years in the bank has allowed me to have an indepth knowledge and understanding of the operations. This has afforded me the opportunity to be able to look at the compliance aspect of opening and closing process of accounts, the managing of client relationships, the FAIS & FIC acts exposures, exposure to Money Laundering Act aspect that affects the banking industry and how to combat such, Financial Crime basics to be precise, the risk aspect and the screening correctly of clients, the adherence to Sanctions policy. These are all from the branch environment. As an Assurance Consultant I have been exposed to the Audit Department, the Methodology of the internal audit department, the identification of the risk, the testing of internal controls, the recommendation to be made to the stakeholders after risk has been identified, implementation and embedment of the corrective actions. The adherence to professional standards, the importance of adhering to the professions code of ethics and the high reliance placed on the Audit reports issued by the Assurance Team. The exposure into the Internal Audit team of the branch network has placed me in an advantage not only learn but has also assured me of the route I want to take in Tax Auditing.
