  Paul Symington is a I have over 30 years of IT experience and during this time I have worked in a variety of industry sectors and fulfilled a number of roles. In my career I have worked in Local Government (Hampshire County Council) and in IT Consultancy (Cray Systems) , for a world leading software vendor (Oracle) and a major international retailer (Kingfisher). I began my IT career as a Computer Operator working for Hampshire County Council and while at that organization I progressed through a number of roles including Business Analyst, Application Programmer, Application Designer, Support Analyst and IT Consultant. Following this settled stage I spent two relatively brief spells at Cray Systems and Oracle. My time at Cray Systems was spent on two customer assignments, the first as a System Tester at Mercury Telecommunications and the second at the Department of Employment as a Software Engineer. An opportunity then arose for me to join Oracle as a Support Consultant working in the Vertical Applications business unit. The following year, this area of the Oracle business was subject to a management buyout and I took the opportunity to seek a position closer to home and I joined the IT Department of B&Q in September 1995. Since then the IT function at B&Q has transformed into a separate company called Kingfisher IT Services, but still remained part of the parent group. I have now been at Kingfisher for nineteen years. My first role was as a Business Systems Developer supporting store-based systems then I became an Analyst Programmer building solutions for our in-house data warehouse. After a couple of years I was made team lead. When SAP’s Business Warehouse solution was introduced, I took on the role of Lead Technical Specialist and achieved my certification in SAP BW. My most recent role at Kingfisher has been as a DBA looking after our 1000+ Oracle databases that lie at the heart of most of our mission critical applications.
