  Paul Gruber is a Since '99, I have been teaching Math at a Elizabeth High School; Several years ago, the school that was given the highest of ratings by Newsweek, US News & World Report & the Washington Post. This ranking is not an accident, it is due to the dedication of our staff. I teach AP Calc AB and BC, but I also mentored & have in-serviced teachers in district. In 2021, after being recruited, I transferred to teach for the Hillside Public Schools - my home town. In 2010, no students signed up for AP Calc. When the principal of the school asked students what it would take for them to take AP Calc, the answer was "only with Mr. G.". That first year, we had 11 students taking the exam. In 2011-15 over 50 students took AP Calc with passing % of over 60% each year. Please note the school has only 1200 students and the national passing % for urban kids is about 23%. In 2017-18, over ninety students took the AP exam. I taught 60 of them & my passing rate remained consistent. This year, 2018-19, our school has over 150 students taking AP Calc-AB and we are offering AP Calc BC - where 18 are taking that course. IMHO, what makes this even more outstanding is that since I teach in an urban district where many believe that urban students can't do - we are proving them wrong. All students can excel - if given the right tools versus memorizers! Each year, when I pass the national %-ile, because of my belief in equity, rather than trying to get a higher %, I constantly try to get more students to enroll. As I reach the twightlight of my career, it is my hope to become an administrator in Math and affect the next generation of teachers. To that end, if your reading this and your district wants a "paper pusher", then I am not the person. But, if you truly want to improve test scores, the quality of education & believe all kids "can do", then please contact me. in the year of Covid, my passing rate on AP Calc AB was 82.6% with 30% scoring 5. on BC, it was 71.1% 😁 Building equity one student at a time! Since 2014, I have graded the AP Calc Exam. Since 2015, I have been leading A. P. Summer Institutes where I inculcate Brain-Based Learning & the use of transfer. Some of the comments made by the participants are heartwarming: "This was one of the best APSIs I ever attended.....I hope to attend other staff development that he is leading" "...his method of starting with a known concrete example..and gradually evolving into Calculus concepts is brilliant and enlightening.."
