Some stay for just a few days while others stay for months. It is a very trying time for most families, but I love being able to watch over their little ones and be their advocate when the parents just can't be there. It's very rewarding but emotionally challenging at the same time. I have been doing this for over 25 years. Also in this time I have worked briefly in labor and delivery, so I have a good knowledge base of what can happen before the baby is even born. I have also worked with some of the children who continue to need extra care at home once out of the hospital, and I currently have been working with the elderly in their homes for those needing some assiatance, especially with managing their medications. I originally started that with taking care of my own aging parents and could see how much assistance they really did need. The medications for my mother were crazy, like 250-300 pills a week. My dad was getting too confused to organize his own along with hers, so I took that role over as well. I am currently working with a gentlemen who's children are unable to provide on hands help with his current medications. This has really made a difference in his health (making sure all the correct medications are divided in daily/timed dosages) so I believe there must be others out there who could use this same assistance.
