My research focuses broadly on the engagement of disenfranchised peoples with U.S. imperialism during the mid to late nineteenth century. I also have a keen interest in the Irish language and multilingualism in the United States. In the summer of 2021, I published a critical volume of the translated works of Irish language writer Eoin Ua Cathail, entitled 'Recovering an Irish Voice from the American Frontier' (UNT Press). My book ‘From a Land Beyond the Wave’: Connecticut’s Irish Rebels, 1798-1916 (2017) won the Connecticut League of History Organizations’ Publication Prize (2018). I have also published my research widely in both Irish and English through various academic and popular platforms including The Irish Times, New Hibernia Review, Éire-Ireland, Irish Studies Review, Irish Political Review, Village Magazine, the West Cork People, Comhar, Nós, Feasta, and ConnecticutHistory.org. At Sacred Heart University (2013-2016), I designed and taught modules in Global and American History, the Irish Diaspora, Irish History, and Beginner's Irish Language. I am currently a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Galway, investigating the consumption of popular American West culture in Ireland from 1922-Present. I am also employed as an Irish language teacher, editor and corrector of materials for Gaelchultúr/Coláiste na hÉireann.
