In 1996 I was in my 20’s and at the top of my game. I had been a working actor, dancer, singer/songwriter since age 16. I had just been offered a coveted deal with a cutting -edge indie record label. But though it broke my heart, I had to turn it down. Why? Because my health was failing, and I knew there was no way I could go on the road to support my album. But let’s back up… My first experience with a live performance was a ballet of Peter Rabbit with my parents when I was 18 months. Evidently, I was completely mesmerized and made the very smart decision to begin the living of my life as a continuous song and dance💃🏻🎶. By 16, I was working professionally. Growing up in an immigrant family that valued mental toughness, extroversion, and success, I strove to prove to my folks that a life in the arts wasn’t silly. Then I became very sick, and no one knew what was wrong. After seeing many doctors, therapy helped me realize I was Highly Sensitive, a newly recognized trait. Through emotional and spiritual practices, I started to heal. Like many HSPs, I had thought something was wrong with me. It turns out, my career, schedule, and family dynamics led to constant overstimulation, which can be disastrous for HSPs. I have been working with others like me to better navigate their sensitivity.
