Osamwonyi Otabor Email & Phone Number | During my Biomedical Sciene degree I developed great knowledge and relevant skills through my year of study such as the use of UV/visible spectrophotometry, centrifugation techniques, safe handling of biological materials, core skills in microscopy, dealt with biological samples: histology and tissue preparation, microbiology techniques: Aseptic techniques, staining and visualization of bacteria, viable counts methods, viruses (bacteriophage). Clinical molecular genetics: use of electrophoresis for DNA plasmid, making of Agarose gel, Hematology and Transfusion science: making of a good quality stained smear, RBC count with the use of Hemacytometer. My MSc in Haematology enabled me to develop an up-to-date, advanced understanding of the disorders of blood and blood-forming tissues. Using critical analytical skills, to evaluate new developments in research into the blood sciences. I developed skills in the reading and interpretation of the literature and translating that into evidence-based practice. Also developed my research and writing skills that allowed me to contribute to scientific literature in an effective manner. Final year project was carried out on the effect of blood collection tubes on the SERUM and PLASMA levels on LDH and IL6. here was a significant difference between the gold tube (serum) and grey tube (plasma); however recent studies showed that the additive in the grey tube had an effect on the levels of LDH. Levels of LDH was elevated in one the male donor who was very active in exercise, also there was a statistically significant increase in the mean value of the females serum LDH; because one of the female blood donors was asthmatic. Conclusion: Gathered results and studies shows that biomarkers in this study case LDH and IL-6 serum and plasma levels can be affected by the type of vacutainer collection and storage method.
