I am interested in a research career focused in molecular mechanisms as they relate to chronic gastrointestinal inflammation and nutritional intervention. Growing up, I had two west highland white terriers that suffered terribly from irritable bowel disease and other complications of food allergies. As a result, my dogs were on chronic drug regimens that gradually weakened their immune systems and triggered a host of other health problems. Ultimately, one of my dogs succumbed to complications from the drugs and his disease. Through my experiences working in veterinary clinics and caring for my pets, I became acutely aware of the limited and frustrating treatments we use to manage chronic gut diseases in animals. These understandings motivated me to pursue a DVM/PhD that integrated nutrition and veterinary medicine. My ideal career would be working as a faculty member at a university veterinary hospital, with responsibilities for teaching, conducting research, and providing clinical consultations for patients via a small animal nutrition service. My long-term research interests include the mechanistic investigation and clinical treatment of companion animal chronic gastrointestinal diseases, especially in the space of developing sustainable and nutritious diets and supplements that will promote disease prevention and improve life quality for our animals.
