I believe that shifting public perspective on mundane materials—especially garbage—can empower us to adapt and make a difference in our quickly changing world. My cross-platform art work integrates spatial sound, video, field recordings, textiles, recycling, the human body, and liminal spaces to this end. With sustainability as a driving force, I create multi-modal experiences centered around e-waste and compost to engage and educate the public about personal agency & our role in achieving environmental sustainability in the face of global climate change. My main project, Composing [De]Composition connects the arts/science/nature/technology: using composting and DIY ethics to generate music, multi-point sound art installations, data sonifications/visualizations, audio display designs, and online experiences. Past works include: a 360˚interactive improvisation environment using gamelan instruments, motion capture video, textiles, and electronics to speak about the growing e-waste disposal issue witnessed while living in Java; a sound environment in response to Japan's 2011 Tohoku tsunami and beach erosion in Bali; and an interactive bamboo sound garden built for a 700 year old Chinese village where most public space has been paved for a new bamboo museum's parking area. In the 1990s, I was a pioneer female Dj, live electronic musician/improviser & arts/dance music event producer on the West Coast. I helped found SF's SPaZ art and music collective, organizing free, outdoor parties in the Bay Area and touring across the US and Europe--SPaZ US tours introduced liveset electronic music to the burgeoning American techno sound systems.
