This led to a Bachelor’s internship at the Division of BioTherapeutics within the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR), where I studied the different cytotoxic CD8+ T cell subsets in atherosclerosis. For my Master’s degree, I decided to which to Biomedical Sciences as I am more interested in the biomedical side of research rather than the pharmaceutical side. During my first Master’s internship, I further explored the field of cardiovascular disease in the Department of Vascular Surgery within the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in the group of Dr. M.R. de Vries and Prof. Dr. Quax, where my research focused on the role of T cells in vein graft disease. For my second Master’s internship, I worked on a collaborative project between the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Department of Endocrinology (LUMC), which focused on the role of (submucosal) adipocytes in (early) colorectal cancer. After obtaining my Master’s degree, I stayed in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Research Assistant to continue on the project and to coordinate a clinical study on the effect of Mediterranean diet intervention on submucosal fat in early colorectal cancer. After a little detour in gastroenterology, I’m back in vascular research joining the group of Dr. M.R. de Vries and Prof. Dr. Quax, where I started as a PhD candidate in April 2023. During the four years of my PhD, I will focus on the complex relation between dietary interventions, gut microbiome, and perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) browning to improve vascular remodeling.
