  Nicholas Outram is a My first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, but I’ve always gravitated towards software engineering. I started programming age 12 and have been programming ever since. Upon completing my Ph.D. (DSP and AI), I worked as a DSP/Software Engineer in the medical devices industry. During this time I worked mostly in TMS320 assembler (for DSP) alongside some C++ (RTOS). I later returned to academia, teaching across electronics and computer science programmes. During this time, I have taken a key role in our embedded systems curriculum. This has created opportunities to learn (and teach) a broad spectrum of technologies, ranging from hardware (SystemVerilog and VHDL) and software at different levels of abstraction (ranging from bare metal on STM32, through to Mbed and micro-python). I’ve used Qt for visualisation of data and taught embedded Linux development. I also lead on IoT and mobile development (ObjectiveC/Swift for iOS, C# for Xamain). I also use Python as a replacement for MATLAB and some micro-python for prototyping on the Raspberry Pi Pico. Over the years, I have significantly invested time in a broad spectrum of programming frameworks, including Mbed (RTOS), VxWorks, Qt and to some extent Gtk+, mostly using C++. All of these have introduced different patterns and approaches. Given the real dangers of software and my medical device history, any patterns and methods of abstraction that are conducive to safer more scalable code have personal appeal. Despite my first degree in electronics, I would describe myself as an experienced low-level programmer with an affinity for high level programming. I feel the hardware awareness and low-level experience makes me a more holistic developer when working at higher levels of abstraction. This is especially true for issues relating to performance and safety, including memory management and management of blocking hardware. I have invested many years in programming FPGA. Starting with VHDL (self-taught), I later moved to SystemVerilog. This has made it possible for students to build modestly complex systems solving real-world problems, and critically, how to verify and validate those systems. The emphasis is on testing and simulation, using real-hardware for the final validation. My daily driver for (almost) everything is Ubuntu Linux. I have some experience writing user space applications with Linux (Desktop; BeagleBone Black; Raspberry Pi). For “native” Linux software development, I also taught embedded Linux that included hardware interfacing, multi-threaded programming (pthreads) and IPC.
