Starting out with HM Revenue & Customs, before making the switch after 5 years to work in the real world (I believe the phrase is gamekeeper turned poacher). I don't regret my days at HMRC, as they have benefitted me and my clients in some unexpected ways, but I much prefer it in the real world, dealing with real people and building strong relationships lasting years. After leaving HMRC I worked for a combination of a small Accountancy practice and a firm of specialist Tax Consultants, but went 'all in' in 2003 before moving to a larger firm of Chartered Accountants in 2006. This variety, and the mix of clients that I act for has given me a real appreciation of the differences that exist in the make up of our economy. I jumped at the chance to become a partner in Carter & Co, as this is the perfect sized business for me to operate from. We have a great team of genuinely nice people all working together to give me the ability to get to know my clients, whilst giving them the service that they require, at a cost effective price and with a 'real world' understanding of what they are trying to achieve.
