I am particularly interested in research that focuses on autistic children using assistive technology, such as mHealth apps. I believe that it is important to ensure this research is supported by the community and can be translated into practice. Currently, I am a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle and a provisional psychologist. The aim of my research is to pilot a tablet app for school-age autistic children to build social skills. We use EEG, eye-tracking and cognitive assessments to measure changes before and after children use the app. I am also investigating parent perceptions of psychological interventions and technology. Over the course of the last 10 years, I have been working toward building my skills in research and practice. I was awarded a graduate assistantship from Baylor University (USA) to study for a master’s degree and work alongside at-risk youth to support their transition to university or community college. I then managed a lab at Texas A&M University (USA) which used AI technology to help children learn (math) by teaching. The role had me work closely with local primary schools to conduct the in-vivo studies and led to multiple research publications. There is more to learn through my research and as a psychologist, both of which I hope can inform each other.
