I’ve been afforded the opportunity to gain understanding of disability identity and culture through my roles as a Schools Plus mental health clinician, learning coach, post-secondary learning disability transitional coordinator, mental health researcher and clinician, ASL language learner, and a neurodivergent community member. My approach as a self-reflective practitioner is to hold safe space for storytelling in order to learn more about an individual’s lived experience, community, and culture so I can better address their disability-related issues within a broad context. Listening to their experiences led to a passion for disability advocacy and inclusion efforts. Soon I began presenting in conferences and conducting workshops, while collaborating and learning from other disability, equity, and inclusion professionals. While I love facilitating groups and public speaking, being able to utilize my counselling skills to facilitate self-knowledge and compression for personal difference and uniqueness, is what I enjoy most. Through my coaching and clinical work, I have demonstrated flexibility and creativity in developing, implementing, and monitoring specialized learning accommodations and strategies that meet specific student needs. For example, at the University of Windsor, my instruction and their application of assignment comprehension strategies, lifted a psychology student from academic probation. Another example was using a student’s mutual passion for Dungeons & Dragons to communicate gaming’s applicability on their co-op resume. I have immense gratitude and appreciation for every individual I have worked with and for the lessons they’ve instilled about resilience, self-efficacy, and innovation
