Mohammed Aiyaz Email & Phone Number | I am currently employed as a Research Associate at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pune. I am working with Dr. Kalika Prasad in area of plant molecular biology, developmental biology, and molecular genetics. Here my research focuses on the process of de novo shoot regeneration (DNSR) from decapitated leaves of various plant species. Specifically, I am looking at the influence and role of age and autophagy on direct shoot regeneration from the cut end of leaves. As part of my role, I am also co-supervising five BS-MS students who are conducting their research projects on this topic. Prior to my current position, I worked as a Department of Biotechnology Research Associate (DBT-RA) at IISER Thiruvanthapuram. During that time, my research focused on simulating natural injuries in growing leaves and stems to study the reconnection of mechanically disconnected vascular veins. This work aimed to understand how disconnected veins rejoin without any connection to the existing leaf vein. we revealed the entire molecular mechanism behind this vein regeneration process. Additionally, I conducted research on the regeneration capabilities of detached Arabidopsis leaves, exploring role of touch in wound healing and de novo root regeneration responses. The study revealed plants upon injury imitate two responses upon touch of cut leaf part to substrate or no touching of cut surface to substrate. We revealed upon touch of the cut surface to soil it formed root and absence of any touch at surface led to the formation of Callus. During doctoral research I studied Aspergillus and Fusarium across India, which produce carcinogenic and health affecting aflatoxins and fumonisins. To overcome the challenges of morphological identification studied fungi, I developed DNA-based molecular markers for accurate species identification. This enhanced species identification and shortened time of identification of fungi. Furthermore, I isolated and characterized natural non-toxigenic mutants with gene deletions in secondary metabolite production aflatoxin and fumonisin genes. Additionally, I explored the use of Trichoderma, Rhizobacteria, and phytochemical extracts as biological control agents to manage toxigenic fungi. The research I have conducted has resulted in the publication of articles in esteemed journals such as Developmental Cell, Plant Physiology and Development Journal. Furthermore, my work has garnered attention from various national and international media outlets, including The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Node and Plantae.
