Over the course of his career, Han has been a medical oncologist, clinical cancer geneticist and biomedical scientist. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1998 with gold medals in internal medicine and pediatrics. He trained in medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore, and completed a PhD in molecular epidemiology and biostatistics at the Karolinska Institute and National University of Singapore. He is a two-time recipient of the ASCO Foundation Merit Award for cancer research (2005, 2006), and was awarded the individual ASEAN Youth Award for Science (2010). He received the Ambrose Monell and Lee Foundation Fellowships for clinical cancer genetics at the Cleveland Clinic. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 2015. He was awarded the Sword of Honor as a medical officer cadet serving national service with the Singapore Armed Forces in 2000. Han’s research interests center on liquid biopsy for cancer treatment selection, diagnosis and screening. He has contributed over 100 publications, including in journals such as Nature, Science Translational Medicine, and Cancer Cell. Highlights of his liquid biopsy research include co-developing mirror barcode technology for multicancer early detection and minimal residual disease, and co-discovering the circulating tumor-endothelial cluster for early cancer detection. Together with Prof Charis Eng, he described the diagnostic criteria and lifetime cancer risks for a hereditary breast cancer syndrome defined by germline PTEN mutations, that serve today as the global reference standard. Han served as the first editor of the Singapore Cancer Network Guidelines (2014-2017) and the chairman of the inaugural Oncology Drug Subcommittee of the Drug Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health Singapore (2015 - 2017). He is a current steering committee member of the I-CONFIRM consortium of the US National Cancer Institute.
