  Milan Sanyal is a Milan K. Sanyal is Emeritus Professor and former Director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata. He is also Adjunct Professor in International Centre for Materials Science at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore. Prof. Sanyal was a Senior Professor in the grade of a Distinguish Scientist till January 2016 at SINP – an autonomous institute in Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). He joined SINP in 1995 to initiate a research group in surface physics; he was Head, Surface Physics Division from 1997 to 2009 and has served as the Director of the institute SINP from July 2009 to January 2014. Before joining SINP he was a Scientific Officer in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, DAE Mumbai from 1977 and was a Research Associate in Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA from 1989 to1992. Prof. Sanyal is a fellow of all three academies of sciences in India, namely Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy Sciences, The National Academy of Sciences, India. He is also a fellow of The World Academy of Science (TWAS), Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials and West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology, India. He has also received several awards including N.S. Satyamurthy Award, DAE Raja Ramanna Award, CNR Rao Prize Lecture in Advanced Materials, National Research Award, Nano Science and Technology, Government of India (2017), Raja Ramanna Fellowship (2018 - Present) and J.C. Bose fellowship. He was/is a Member of several important national committees like Science Advisory Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India, India-Japan Science Council and Council (2009-2012) of Indian National Science Academy. Prof. Sanyal was also President of both Indian Physical Society (2010-2013) and Indian Physics Associations (2011-2014). His research interest are synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering studies of surface and interfaces. He has made fundamental contributions to develop understanding of growth-mechanism and structure-property-relationship in low-dimensional materials like quantum-dots, nanowires, ultra-thin films and x-ray scattering from liquid surface and liquid-liquid interfaces. Prof. Sanyal and his research students have found existence of charge density wave (CDW) state in conducting-polymer nanowires exhibiting switching transition to highly conducting state giving novel photo-response.
