Land surveying, by definition, is "the science and art of determining the area and configuration of portions of the surface of the earth, and representing them on maps." The surveyor researches the historical land records and deeds of a certain area. He then collects data of angles and distances between physical features in and around the defined area. After thoroughly analyzing the collected information and data, the surveyor marks the actual land using existing permanent features, such as rocks and trees, or by artificial means like rebar or concrete monuments. The surveyor then draws out a legible picture of the land on paper, as well as writing a legally binding description of said picture, to explain the ownership and properties of the land in the real world. The collected body of work then stands as the official law of the land regarding who owns what with both physical proof on land and historical precedence on paper. My past 22 years have been spent exploring, researching, and defining the boundaries of Ohio. I research at county courthouses & on-line, finding the historical records on the lands I then visit. I collect field data by finding existing monumentation on & around the properties in question. I measure angles and distances with various equipment. I draw, by hand or software, representations of the properties I have visited. The profession involves the thrill of exploring the real world as well as the satisfaction of using my mind to relate what I've found. It requires me to be a scientist, an historian and even an artist. The profession changes the world because it defines and legitimizes specifically where the boundaries within the world are.
