Mike Barnkob is a I am a doctor specializing in clinical immunology at Odense University Hospital (OUH), Denmark. My research interests are chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, synthetic biology and cancer. At OUH I am involved in developing our cell-therapy laboratory for clinical treatments using both commercial and in-house developed CAR T cells against hematological cancers. I am currently a Lundbeck Foundation clinical fellow, associated with the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at University of Oxford to explore CAR T cell function and biology. Previously my research has focused on exploring the interactions between tumour-specific T cells, tumours and their microenvironments in the context of prostate cancer (at MIT) and kidney cancer (at University of Oxford). How can we enable T cells to function in these environments? It’s my belief that the future of oncology lies at the interphase between synthethic biology and immunology. By reprogramming T cells to better function in tumours or to attack novel targets, we are able to increase the strength and power of the body’s own immune system, and hopefully cure cancer.
