Miguela Caniza Email & Phone Number | My focus is infection care and prevention in low-middle income countries, especially among pediatric patients who are immunocompromised, such as children with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and bone marrow transplant recipients. I have been actively involved in improving survival of children with cancer worldwide by building local capacity for best care and prevention of infection, collaborating with local teams, using education as a tool to improve the ability of limited resource institutions to care and prevent infections, and promote ethics in research. Through the St. Jude International Visiting program, I mentored physicians and nurses at St. Jude and to date over 100 participants took advantage of the St. Jude Visiting program. For those healthcare providers who could not come to St Jude, I had used our distance learning technology available at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.cure4kids.org). With my team and collaborators we trained over 200 doctors and nurses of Latin America in the infection prevention and control. Together with my team, I build and sustain human capacity at those institutions by developing and implementing strategies to maximize the use of existing resources and leverage the expertise and resources not only available at St. Jude, but also at domestic and international organizations such as the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the Association of Professionals of Infection Control and the World Health Organization. A complement to this effort is developing, facilitating and participating in studies related to infectious diseases while building research infrastructure including ethics in research and data management in countries where we conduct collaborative clinical and quality improvement studies.
