Michelle Zimmerman Email & Phone Number | I began my professional career as an elementary school teacher, spending 14 years teaching 4th and 5th grade. During this time, one of my favorite aspects of the job was sharing my love of children's literature with my students. From weaving children's literature into Social Studies units to founding a Breakfast Book Club, reading and stories were a vital part of my day. When my career path took a turn, it was not surprising that I turned towards being a children's librarian. I was fortunate to work in a hybrid program, where the city of Worcester has created a partnership between the public library and the public schools, housing small public library branches inside elementary schools. While school was open, I planned and conducted class visits for grades PreK through 6: reading stories, presenting powerpoints or videos on various subjects, or providing library skills instruction, while also assisting students in picking out books to borrow. After school and during vacations, the library was open to the public, making the collection available to neighborhood residents and also providing children's programs. My position at the Worcester Library laid the groundwork for my transition to being a full time school library media specialist. I completed a graduate certificate in School Library Media to supplement my Master's Degree in Elementary Education, and I am now teaching library classes in Woonsocket to grades K-5. As with all teachers, I have been facing the challenges of teaching through a pandemic, and I am proud of the district-wide planning and organization that have been the backbone of the teaching plans in Woonsocket. Like all teachers, I have learned a tremendous amount about Google Classroom, Google Meets, and preparing lessons for virtual students, while continuing to teach to in-person students through our hybrid model. In addition to sharing books on various topics with the students, I also encourage participation in the Rhode Island Children's Book Award Contest and teach coding to students at all grade levels with the website Code.org. As I reach the milestone of twenty years in the field of elementary education, I have a wealth of training that includes the Wilson Language program, reading strategies, restorative practices, Alice training, and PBIS.
