Coordinated a deer impact survey for Willowsford Conservancy, Inc., which entailed deploying a grid of motion sensor cameras, surveying vegetation with emphasis on deer browsing effects, and spotlighting deer at night to determine densities. Assisted in capturing, measuring, and tagging white tailed deer for a long term monitoring project. Mentored high school students participating in a field techniques summer course taught through the Smithsonian Mason School of Conservation. I provided technical lessons on collecting forest data, taught plant taxonomy, and provided guidance for their final presentation. Presented at the Smithsonian Emerging Scientist Symposium on preliminary analyses of the forest census with regard to species abundance and future predictions.-Sample nekton in creeks, ditches and pools of salt marshes using ditch nets and throw traps. -Collect percent cover of marsh vegetation. -Assist with other Natural Resource Management programs such as Pipping Plovers and vegetation surveying.Organized and planned outdoor trips for Wake Forest students and faculty Managed a bouldering wall entailing upkeep, loaning equipment, setting routes, giving advice/tips and risk management. Worked in the office renting equipment, upkeep of equipment, working knowledge of all equipment used and good social skills. Participated in a kayak leader training course at US National White Water Center, Charlotte, North Carolina (2010). Certified in Wilderness First Aid (2009) and CPR (current). Participated in swift water training through American Canoe Association (2011). Proficient in climbing knots, climbing anchors, belay techniques, kayak safety, river safety, back country first aid.Conducted vegetation surveys of herbs, shrubs and trees in maritime forest based off of set NPS protocols. Managed two interns and one volunteer. Aided the wildlife biologist and interns in enclosing Piping Plover nests. Assisted the regional biologist in tagging and measuring horseshoe crabs to determine breeding habitats. Caught, measured and tagged Box Turtles for a collaborative project between the NPS and University of Rode Island. Collected data on surf fishermen as part of a pilot National Park Service project.Conducted vegetation surveys of herbs, shrubs and trees in Sunken Forest to determine deer effects on the forest. Established permanent plots for future vegetation surveying. Participated in GPS/GIS training. Assisted the regional biologist in catching and identifying tidal zone aquatic life for ongoing research.Developed Biology and Chemistry lesson plans for interactive, hands-on science education for 420 high school students. School was limited in available resources due to remote location and lack of funds. Provided after-school laboratory technical training, and tutoring to all students thus improving National Examination technical application component scores by 26%. Awarded a $1000 grant to create a regional science and math conference for 35 students and 5 teachers from 5 schools in Iringa Region.Participated in seven weeks of Peace Corps training in teaching, Sierra Leone culture, language, and community building. Program was suspended early due to the outbreak of ebola. Lived with host family to strengthen lessons learned during training and form relationships that allow for cross culture discussions and sharing.
