Michael is also a trained ethnographer with a PhD in anthropology and sociology. He has applied his academic skills with marginalised participants concerning sensitive issues, including in rural and remote Australia for public and private sector work, as well as international fieldwork for a doctorate in anthropology and sociology. In his current role, Michael leads the development of data standards, design research, and industry guidelines in support of a complex multi-sector initiative: the Consumer Data Right (CDR). As part of this work, Michael conducts complex consultations with stakeholders across a range of sectors, including banks, fintechs, energy, telco, non-bank lending, consumer and privacy advocates, industry bodies, and government stakeholders.
