Matthew Knapik is a Matt Knapik is a senior associate based out of O2’s Calgary office. He studied architecture and urban design at the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape at the University of Calgary, where his research focused on infrastructure and ecological connectivity in suburban spaces. His design work, graphics, research, and installations have been published and presented in Canada, the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia. Matt is a purposeful and enthusiastic project leader. At O2, he brings his extensive facilitation experience and thoughtful design sensibility to bear on projects in planning, landscape, and urban design. He is constantly seeking new ways to animate complex ideas and integrate emerging technologies in the design process. Prior to joining O2, Matt ran his own practice called Kilometre Design, which worked across diverse domains and scales, from book design to community engagement and regional-scale mapping and design. Matt has instructed more than 24 design courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, with a focus on advanced digital workflows, storytelling, and design representation. He has taught at Mount Royal University and at the University of Calgary, where he was corecipient of the Faculty of Environmental Design Award for Teaching Excellence. Matt is a founding member of the award-winning design & research collaborative THE BENCH PROJECT, where he volunteers his time to develop community-driven public space projects. From 2011-2018, he co-hosted the radio show Charmer’s Almanac on Calgary’s community radio station, CJSW.
