Matt Chapman Email & Phone Number | Sixteen years into my career teaching middle school math and/or science, I was granted permission to transform a large classroom into a kid-friendly tool-lab and Maker Space. I now use it to teach a STEAM elective class through Making, to encourage students to learn using their hands, not just their thumbs. My students now actually learn and apply practical math organically. They test and revise models they have designed because they can; they have the materials, tools, and the technical support for their project development. By 8th grade, I believe these students have learned and experienced more than they ever would from any of the standards based textbooks that have been levied upon them. I see 11-14 year old students enjoying a safe, relaxed, well equipped, supervised, tool and technology space. The shop contains hand and power tools for woodworking, a fleet of 3D printers, several CNC machines and a laser cutter. My students cooperate, collaborate, and truly innovate as a result. I almost fell over the first time I overheard a student remark to their work partner "I LOVE coming to this classroom!" because I had never before heard that in my career. I now overhear this type of earnest feedback on a regular basis. Parents want to participate. Kids are at the door at 7:00 AM some days (school begins at 9:00). The MakerLab is open everyday at for a zero period and lunch and will be open twice a week after school.
