My duties included: • Statistical analysis of specification attainment for the pig iron. • Updating and tracking operational Key Performance Indicators My achievements included: • Performing dephosphorization test work on the Iron Plant to reduce the amount of phosphorus in the iron tapped from the furnaces through the injection of a synthetic slag. • Testing different injection lances to achieve optimum performance and cost efficiency. • Technical feasibility study on the removal of impurities in the iron with the addition of reagents. • Optimisation of carbon recoveries and sulphur pick-up from alternate carbon sources. • Evaluating and optimising carbon yields at various injection points in the process. • Improving the iron ladle scheduling by identifying areas that cause delays and making changes to the process to eliminate/minimise delays and improve refractory lining life.I was involved in the commissioning and process optimisation of various plants within Namakwa Sands. The one plant was the Primary Concentration Plant at Brandsebaai Mine, which separates the sand into heavy minerals and tailings. The other plant was the Off-Gas Cleaning Plant at the Smelter where CO gas is produced as off-gas in the furnace and then cleaned and cooled in the Off-Gas Cleaning Plant before being flared off into the atmosphere.
