Mary Sullivan Email & Phone Number | I am fortunate to have my dream job as a math professor at Cape Cod Community College. I see my roles as: Teaching Math: As I student, I always loved math. I loved seeing patterns and making connections, I loved the clarity and precision, loved visualization, and loved playing with ideas in my mind. As a math professor, my goals are to share my enthusiasm for the subject, to make math accessible (and even enjoyable!), to create a learning environment in which students feel respected, and to maintain high academic standards. I especially love working with students who have not previously experienced success in their math classes. I believe that students are capable of more than they think! Academic Advising: The transition from high school to college to career can be bumpy. Students need to be equipped with the skills and self-knowledge that will allow them to make informed decisions regarding academic and career planning. As a faculty advisor, I guide students to resources and opportunities and serve as a sounding board for ideas. To better serve my students, I am in the process of being certified as a Career Services Provider through the wonderful National Career Development Association. Community Building: I believe strongly in the importance of community college. At its best, community college can play a big role in sustaining a civil society. Not only is it a place where individuals can find like-minded people who share their passions (e.g. physics, poetry), it is a place where students and others can interact with people who come from different cultures, speak different languages, have different backgrounds, have different perspectives, and are from different generations. And when people come together and exchange ideas, innovation and creativity flourish! In addition to helping build community on my campus, I helped to start a non-profit called Cape Cod Makers to create a local community of “makers”—inventors, artisans, tinkerers, engineers, and other creative types. We organized the Cape Cod Maker Faire from 2013 to 2018, and the organization now runs the LaunchPad Maker Space in Harwich.
