I completed my apprenticeship at a mold shop, Accede Mold and Tool, where I spent most of my time in the CNC area. After my apprenticeship, I continued to work in several mold shops, programming CNC mills, and ended up at Syntec Optics( formerly Rochester Tool and Mold), where I built mold bases and components, and eventually started working on optical inserts and diamond-turned components. From there I moved on to Optimax, where I learned to generate prototype optics in glass, as well as continue to do a little diamond turning. For the last 15+ years I've been a diamond turning tech at Bausch + Lomb, programming and running Precitech and Optiform diamond turning lathes to produce optical pins and components for optical molds, as well as pins, components and fixtures for the IOL segment of our business. I was able to help bring Mastercam into our lab, and we can now use it to help machine components on the Precitech lathes, as well as optical quality aspheric optics for mold pins. In the precision machining end of our business, I have been involved with micro-machining, both on the Precitech lathes, where I machine axis marks to micron tolerances using .007 inch ball end mills with an air-driven, high speed auxiliary spindle mounted to the lathe and the main spindle locked at a desired location, and milling details using a HAAS mill, with .009 inch flat end mills and high-speed milling techniques. I have also developed a dry milling technique for cutting with these tools, without any coolant, in order to lessen the chance of scratches from chips, as well as contamination from the coolant, when milling on plated surfaces that have been previously diamond turned. In 2018 I took over the position as apprentice coordinator for the toolroom here at B+L. We have a 4 yr, 8000 hr program that combines hands on training with continued education( completion of a minimum of an associates degree required) leading to a toolmaker designation. I have recently joined MCC in 2021 as an adjunct instructor, helping to develop and teach an "Introduction to Diamond Turning' class. We are starting it out as a workshop, with the intention to incorporate it into a full semester class. This is something I believe has been sorely needed for a long time. At the end of 2023 I joined Syntec Optics as a senior diamond turning tech and apprentice coordinator. I am hoping to help Ryan Kromm and the rest of the Syntec team grow diamond turning as well as re-instituting an apprenticeship program.
