Go off on your own, build a business, do things unencumbered by the network, the holding company, 100 years of tradition. Most of the time, nothing comes of it. You need that first account. You need office space. You need people. You need to leave the comfort and security of an established agency where twice a month you get a thank-you note with dollar signs on it. But every now and then, things fall into place. You get that account. You get the office space. You get the people. And you get the chance to do things the way you always thought they should be done. (Turns out you also get to sign a bunch of contracts, you get to assemble a lot of furniture and you get to buy your own dumpster.) In 2013, things fell into place and Factory was founded. We have our offices in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan. Because I live in Michigan, because Royal Oak is a great place to have an ad agency and because we really like our building. So what are we trying to do with this new agency? The work an ad agency should be doing: Building ideas, telling stories, creating culture, making things that make people think and feel about our clients, their brands, their products, their causes. And what kind of agency are we trying to create? The kind people work at because they love working there, not just because of comfort and security and a twice monthly thank-you note. Where everybody gets to try new things and nobody is ever defined just by the title on their business card. We’re still young, as ad agencies go. We’ve got a lot of growing ahead of us.
