This began with my doctoral studies on technological innovation in the Information Society in the early 1980s at the University of Toronto (when the Internet was still incubating in the US Defence Department). Today, I am focused on financial innovation through The Good Economy’s consultancy work on Place-Based Impact Investment (PBII). I am primarily known for my seminal research on the geography of the ICT Revolution at Newcastle University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) and Birkbeck and Queen Mary University of London. This provided the intellectual foundations for three successful consultancies, Local Futures (now part of Grant Thornton), Geoeconomics and The Good Economy Partnership. I also work closely with the University of Bath’s Institute for Policy Research and Centre for Business, Organisations and Society. Radical innovation requires cross-sector collaboration led by a powerful vision of a better and more sustainable future. In 1995, I set up the UK’s first Knowledge Economy Network focused on technological and policy innovation, which brought ICT companies together with central and local government to develop place-based e-business and e-government solutions. The Good Economy is now adopting this collaborative approach to its PBII programme of work, including the establishment of a PBII Leaders Group with representatives from the local authority and financial sectors. In 2021/22, I co-authored the TGE white paper ‘Scaling up Institutional Investment for Place-Based Impact’, the Scottish Government report‘ Business-led Inclusive Growth’ and the Institute for Policy Research (University of Bath) position paper ‘Bath Beyond 2020’.
