Mark Del Guidice Email & Phone Number | My start in furniture making began with building simple utilitarian pieces for my college apartment. I built a bed, a desk, and of course, the all important stereo cabinet. After all, it was the seventies. Over time I came to realize that my management career would not be as rewarding as working with my hands, so I set off on an exploration of furniture making that has brought me to today’s intersection of art, craft and design. When I began this venture I had immediate good fortune when I discovered the Program in Artisanry at Boston University. My exposure there helped me develop a strong visual vocabulary and the woodworking skills necessary to execute my unique personal expression. Through all the years since, I have followed a lot of paths opened up by various commissions and opportunities that have come my way. They have often required learning new skills while providing me with new perspectives. These experiences have also informed my parallel pursuit of artistic expression in speculative pieces of furniture. Currently some of my creative focus is in drawing and carving what I call intuitive hieroglyphs. These are the images incised in some of the surfaces of my work. Over time I have developed a vocabulary of these symbols. Interestingly, I find that despite what these images mean to me, they evoke different personal interpretations from each person that views them, underscoring the interactive nature that furniture and art share. Today, as I progress with this adventure in furniture, I continue to explore, discover, and develop design ideas which allow me to craft new pieces with artistic appeal and contemporary value.
