I had a brief spell with a vendor before returning to be a customer, joining Leeds Permanent (after merger, the Halifax) in 1986. I worked in a range of roles, particularly in the strategy area, finishing as IS Architecture Manager before joining IBM in 1998. In the early 90s I defined a technical architecture which separated presentation, business function and process control and a subsequent component application architecture. In 1996 I wrote the bank's "Thin Client Strategy" leading to the adoption of web technologies for application delivery. When I left I was working on service based architecture and had laid foundations for a central messaging gateway, subsequently implemented. My IBM experience included a very early bank "Multi Channel Architecture"; an ESB like insurance integration gateway before ESBs had been heard of; Portal deliveries from one of the the UK first to one of the global largest; a business re-engineering BPM project and an approach to address call centre desktop complexity. As a Software Architect I worked with many major UK companies, with a strong bias towards financial services, including one of the world's top global banks. In 2010 I took a role leading a European team of technical SMEs working on growing IBM's exploitation of its own software. Following that I became UKI Financial Services Industry Technical Leader, building on my experience both before and within IBM of the exploitation of IT in financial services. Then, in mid 2013 I moved to my final role, as the IBM technical lead for perhaps our most diverse high street name with banking, retail and much more. In 2015 I took the opportunity to move to a more relaxed life, now keeping busy with voluntary activities including Otley Science Festival. In 2017 I was very pleased to be appointed to the Board of Leeds Trinity University.
