Mark Arkinstall Email & Phone Number | Mark was born in Newcastle, Australia. In 1995 he was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with Honours class 1 and the inaugural Peter Kleeman Medal and the Tony Hertzog award. He is a dual Australian and British citizen. After graduation Mark joined Arup, initially in the field of façade engineering, working in the Sydney and Hong Kong offices. After gaining facade engineering experience Mark moved into Arup’s structural engineering team where he was a key design team member for the RAS Exhibition Halls and Dunc Gray Velodrome, both Sydney Olympic venues. Concurrently he enrolled and completed a Master of Engineering Studies at the University of Sydney. He was awarded the inaugural ACEA Professional Development Scholarship. In 1999 Mark moved to Arup Associates in London. He then moved into Arup's Advanced Technology Group, returning to Arup's Sydney office in 2002. In 2003-2004 Mark was Arup’s lead structural engineer for the design of the Beijing National Aquatic Centre, the Watercube. The design challenge was immense and achieving an engineering design solution took all of the skills, knowledge, training and experience that had been gathered over more than a decade. His previous experience of multi-disciplinary design and advanced numerical analysis were combined to achieve the structure of the watercube which is a key element of its architecture. Mark has published many articles, presented at many conferences and venues, and been in several high profile television documentaries (National Geographic and Discovery Channel), as well as radio interviews and newspaper articles and magazines stories. In 2007 Mark founded Arup’s Australasian Advanced Technology + Research Practice which he led until September 2010, at which time he returned to AT+R’s London practice. In 2009 Mark received the MacRobert award from the Royal Academy of Engineering for the innovative design of the Beijing National Aquatic Centre, the Watercube. Mark returned to Arup's London office in 2010 within the Advanced Technology+Research team until he moved back to Arup's Building Engineering team in 2018 In mid 2022 Mark took a career gap year before starting at Mott Macdonald in 2024 in their Special Services Division.
