Maria Smith Email & Phone Number | I started my teaching career in San Diego Unified School District at an inner city Title I school where all my students were English learners and their families struggled socio-economically. I was trained in balanced literacy and reader's/writer's workshop in San Diego, which made me a strong primary literacy teacher. For extra-curricular, I taught intervention after school and coordinated school partnerships and parent engagement. Three years later, my family and I relocated to San Jose and I taught in Berryessa Union School District. I became an independent Step Up to Writing Consultant trained by the author herself. I did contracted services agreement with Santa Clara County of Education to provide staff development in teaching writing for local districts. I also became an associate director for the San Jose Area Writing Project at San Jose State University. I also earned my master's degree in Educational Leadership and Administration and Supervision. After several years in the classroom, I became a teacher advisor for the BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) induction program through the New Teacher Center, Silicon Valley New Teacher Project (SVNTP). During my employment with SVNTP, I became one of their trainers for Rick Smith's Classroom Management. I was later appointed as an elementary school principal where I received a Panda Cares scholarship/grant through Panda Express to implement the Leader in Me school-wide. Our staff and students learn the 7 habits of highly effective people and work on our paradigms to become the best version of ourselves to help each child find their genius so that they may become leaders. Recognitions: Recipient of Future Educators of America scholarship Recipient of University of San Diego scholarship Recipient of Panda Cares scholarship for Leader in Me Recipient of multiple grants: Silicon Valley Education Foundation and ArtsEdConnect, Berryessa Education Foundation, Berryessa Art and Wine Foundation Santa Clara County After School Collaborative Champion Award (Toyon) Honor Roll School Award (Sierramont)
