Serve as an Alternate Responsible Official in the Select Agent Program, acting as a liaison to Federal agencies and overseeing the development and maintenance of mandated programs and documentation. Serve as a member of the Environmental Health and Safety emergency response team. Coordinate the animal biosafety program with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Comparative Medicine Division (vivarium), and the Occupational Health Program Ensuring research compliance for the biomedical laboratories and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Ensure risk assessments for proposed research are conducted through protocol specific risks assessments and the implementation of a campus wide Safety Management System and certification program for Principal Investigators with laboratory based research Lead auditor for Safety Management System audits (certification, recertification, and surveillance) which cover all aspects of the research laboratories’ activities and associated hazards (chemical, biological, physical, radiological, etc.) Ensure that various forms of biological safety training are delivered to all members of the NUS biomedical laboratory community, creating content for on-line formats as well as in-person, small group case study based training Manage and mentor the Microbiological/Biomedical Group through in-house training and participation in other professional development opportunities Participate in the development and implementation of an on-line risk assessment application which includes the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), OSHE and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Consult with researchers on biosafety issues that arise with their research projects Develop on-line resources related to biological and laboratory safety for the NUS community. Develop, implement and direct biological safety program. Serve as administrator for the Institutional Biosafety Committee, reviewing and registering protocols involving the use of infectious agents or rDNA. Coordinate the IBC review process with the University’s IACUC and IRB compliance committees Conduct periodic training of the IBC, IACUC, and IRB committee members and supporting staff to improve coordination and to inform about regulatory changes Assist investigators and staff with all matters related to biosafety. Develop a database of microorganisms handled and rDNA experiments being conducted and keep updated. Initiate with Employee Health medical surveillance and counseling programs as needed for research staff. Audit laboratories and work practices and communicate findings to management. Develop a biological safety cabinet certification program database and coordinate annual campus-wide certification of biological safety cabinets. Investigate accidents and incidents involving biological agents and materials. Develop and coordinate the campus-wide autoclave verification program to ensure proper decontamination of biohazardous waste. Develop and conduct educational programs and training for faculty, staff and students to improve biological safety. Participate in national workshops and conferences in the areas of biological safety and regulatory compliance. Serve as University of Kentucky’s Responsible Official for the Centers for Disease Control Select Agent Program under the Federal Homeland Security laws and regulations. Coordinate the acquisition of 'select agents' by UK and perform all required inspections. Develop, implement safety, security, incident response plans; transfer of select agents or toxins to registered individuals or entities.
