Marcello Delgado Email & Phone Number | After a decade in education, I’ve decided to pursue a new career in software engineering to further develop the quantitative, design, and engineering skills I honed during my undergraduate with the added benefit and experience of having worked in a people-centered career for most of my professional life. As a result of earning a BS in a proof-based mathematics and an MA in mathematics education from the University of Chicago, I’ve had a quick on-ramp into software engineering. In the year and a half since starting a master’s program at DePaul University, I’ve learned how to code in languages across several paradigms, with a particular focus on real-time systems and multi-threading. Because I’m transitioning from education to software engineering, I bring a unique perspective and set of skills to the workplace, and there are professional dynamics from my time in education that I’m excited to continue in my new line of work. I pride myself on my ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and empathetically with everyone I work with. All of my teaching roles have required extensive collaboration, co-planning, and co-teaching. At one of my schools, my entire professional role required me to co-teach with two other teachers throughout the school day, manage classroom tasks in parallel, and set and track individual growth goals for each of our 200 students. For the three of us, it was normal for our students to improve their SAT math scores by 50 points on average in one school year. The power of strong collaboration is clear to me, and looking ahead into my software career, I am specifically drawn to companies where there is a well-defined and encouraged culture of pairing and mentorship between junior and senior engineers.
