There are plentiful ‘technical solutions’ to such problems, varying from renewable energy to food forests, and from innovative product services to basic income and capitalization of ecosystem services. And of course, there are always some obvious alternatives available like reducing material consumption, ecosystem restoration and a fair redistribution of wealth. Such techniques and alternatives offer luring perspectives of sustainable access to energy services, tasty and healthy food from nearby, recovery of deprived communities, blooming nature, and so on. Despite their passion and an abundance of effective techniques and alternatives, nearly all frontrunners experience big problems in their strive for sustainable solutions. Just like the followers and stragglers, frontrunners are more or less captivated in large systems – organizations, markets, economies, legal orders, electoral systems, financial architecture, corrupted governmental systems – that reward unsustainable behaviour and impede sustainable alternatives. As pawns in such systems, we’re almost constantly exposed to all kinds of negative and right-out perverse incentives that keep us from choosing for (more) sustainable options. So, the quest for sustainability is not so much hindered by a lack of technology or effective alternatives. Structural flaws and adverse incentives in all parts of society constitute the main obstacles to a sustainable development. Within this context I always seek to promote sustainable system changes in cooperation with frontrunners. Building on a versatile experience and a broad knowledge of (un)sustainable affairs I like to join forces with practical innovators to bring about ground-breaking renewals that accelerate sustainable developments. In my work I always try to combine my multidisciplinary knowledge and creativity with a practical approach and a good team spirit. My focus is on system innovations that contribute to ecosystem restoration, sustainable land use and the transition toward a circular economy.
