  Louise Mcgarr is a I completed a Textiles degree at West Surrey College of Art & Design, specialising in Lino printing & natural dyes such as indigo. My career thus started as freelance textile designer, most notably selling prints to fashion retailer Principles. After graduating I travelled India, researching into regional textiles, thus a move to Monsoon & hence Charity Coordinator was a natural progression. I spent 10 years at Monsoon, nurturing The Monsoon Trust into the bigger charitable foundation that it is now, & was Trustee for 4 years. I loved 'making a difference'; supporting projects in Indian communities with whom Monsoon had historically traded. Visiting VIDYA, a school for underprivileged children, & the children's slum homes in Delhi remains the most humbling experience of my life. In 2012 I became Trustee for White Stuff Foundation & in 2014 took over the role of Foundation Manager. Each WS shop was partnered with its own community-based charity, for whom they fundraised & volunteered. Visiting charities & witnessing what was happening at grassroots was absolutely the best part of my job. In 2015 I founded my own business, Made Up Interiors: upcycling & repurposing furniture, thus combining my creativity with environmental ethics. A year later I formalised my passion for printmaking by founding Chai Monster Productions: I create handmade, limited edition linocut/woodcut prints, & love carving portraits of icons such as Malcolm X or Wilfred Owen. I also love sharing my skills by running workshops & passionately believe that to be human we are all innately creative, yet many of us get pigeon-holed at an early age. This inevitably curbs self-belief, & this lack of creativity has an adverse impact upon our mental wellbeing. It's my mission to get people creating again! In 2016 I added Royal Holloway Volunteering to my portfolio. We are a small team who foster partnerships with community groups & charities & facilitate volunteer opportunities for students, thereby making a very real impact upon our community whilst increasing students’ skills & experience. In 2017 we were presented The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service by the Princess Royal. My specific focus is the Community Research Hub, whereby I partner students wishing to develop their experience with the research needs of charities & other non-profit groups, & in 2021/22 I helped launch the Turing Scheme. This aims to remove barriers for underrepresented students to participate in global experiences. Whatever job I have needs to have a 'soul', be it creative or making a positive impact on the world!
