I have taught first grade for all but one of those years. I love teaching first graders to read, write, add, subtract, tell time, count money, and how to be respectful. It is my mission as a first-grade teacher to instill a love of learning in my students. I believe each and every child is unique and special and I work to make sure students enjoy each and every minute in the classroom. I utilize Whole Brain teaching techniques and allow students to work towards their individual goals on our "Super Improver Board". I believe in allowing students to have choices in the way they learn and choices in how they show what they have learned. I make sure students' individual needs are met by carefully assessing where they are at, and taking them from there. I make learning fun and allow students to work together and discuss what they are learning. Students learn so much more by talking to and teaching each other. I also feel it is critical that students are up and moving about to keep their brains engaged. Please view my presentation on how to motivate and engage students. The presentation also includes the results of an action research project that was completed with first-grade students on the effectiveness of dialogue journals.
