I have been creating art since I was a very young girl. Like most children, it began with the usual drawings for family members, and carrying around crayons or chalk. However, when a design I created in elementary school was chosen to represent our town’s pride, I began to take more of an interest in it. I continue to work as an artist and painter to this day. However, as I have explored the benefits of creating art personally, I have developed a belief that art and play are creative processes that serve to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages in a way that many other therapies cannot. I have worked with many individuals, young and old, who have used artwork and play to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, identify distorted cognitions, foster self-awareness, improve familial relationships, manage behavior, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. Throughout my time as a therapist, I have discovered a love for working with young children and families in particular who benefit from exploring these areas in order to communicate their needs or emotions appropriately. As author Eileen Miller remarks, “Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist”. It has been my ambition to allow others this experience of using art and play to achieve their aspirations in therapy, and I am eager to continue to offer this.
