I was born and raised in Indiana, and attended Valparaiso University where I graduated with a degree in Chemistry and performed water quality field work. During my studies I became very interested in nuclear chemistry, which led me to attend graduate school and obtain my PhD in Nuclear Engineering. In graduate school I gained experience in the fields of heat transfer, fluid flow, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and nuclear physics. My first job out of school was at Exponent, where I worked with clients to investigate failure mechanisms of mechanical systems, evaluated the fate and transport of oil and other chemicals, and helped clients in a variety of industries conduct design performance evaluations of their products. I specialized in using modeling and analytical techniques to evaluate mechanical designs and environmental systems. Examples include thermal management of electronics, burn risk analysis geared towards wearables, heat exchangers, battery packs, biomedical devices, flow boiling (and multi-phase) systems, and fate and transport of sediment, oil, and other chemicals in coastal and riverine systems.
