There have been many twists and turns along my professional path, from graduate studies in sculpture to museum work and even a sales position. Each step has been powered by my strong inclination to rise up and meet intense challenges, my core values surrounding sustainability, and a healthy dose of serendipity. ► For 11 years as Manager for the Museum Shop at the Elvehjem Museum of Art, I ran a for-profit entity within a nonprofit. Extending the museum’s educational outreach to both the retail shop and 11 satellite shops, while concurrently prioritizing revenue, created a challenge that fueled my creativity and produced the store’s most profitable years. ► At the Madison Children’s Museum, I was charged among other things with producing a felted wool chicken nest that could travel to 10 different museums. This project opened me up to a new world. Felt is the epitome of a sustainable material with zero waste, and I continue to explore it, creating intimate sculptural objects as well as a whole wall installation of industrial felt. ► My position at Integrated Art Group, where I traveled to corporate and healthcare sites to create art collections, emerged when a friend mentioned a woman who was swamped with installation work. I showed up to pound nails into walls, and within months was at project sites directing installations, applying marketing practices, and presenting evidence-based design to new clients. ► Now, as part of my university position, I teach undergraduate art students about exhibition practices. I share stories about my career alongside practical tips about historic preservation, stretching budgets, and the nuances of curating a show from concept to display.
