Leo Murray Email & Phone Number | I am Senior Lecturer in Sound and an Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching. My academic teaching and research in sound is split between two main areas: firstly, Sound Design and the principles that underpin the way that it has developed and is used in practice across media like films, tv and video games or in industrial contexts like product or automotive design. The second area could broadly be described as sound and truth-telling. This covers things like using sound in non-fiction productions or the authentication and enhancement of sound recordings for forensic purposes. I teach and research on subjects related to the theory and practice of sound in areas such as film and television, games and interactive, popular music and sound studies. I also continue to consult in Digital Media Forensics. This involves enhancement and authentication of audio, image and video. Before becoming a lecturer I worked as a studio recording engineer and then as a radio engineer with BBC Radio in the UK. Whilst working in radio I completed a degree in social sciences, majoring in Criminology. I took a year out to complete a Graduate Diploma in Education in 1999 and moved to Australia in 2001. I have worked on a number of films and documentaries including location and post-production sound for a feature film 'Broken' in 2017. For my sound design on the short film 'Sol Bunker' I won the West Australian Screen Award for Sound, and was also nominated for an Australian Screen Sound Guild award. I published a book 'Sound Design Theory and Practice: Working With Sound' (Routledge 2019) which covers the history of sound design as well as exploring the reasons why sound designers, editors and mixers use sound the way they do to communicate with an audience. It applies to any area of sound design including fiction and non-fiction, film and television, as well as interactive applications like video games.
