  Lee Gehrke is a My primary professorial appointment is in the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School, where I am also a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology. My laboratory is located at MIT, where I am the Hermann von Helmholtz Professor of Health Sciences and Technology. The Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology was recently reorganized at MIT to form the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES). My laboratory studies viruses that use RNA as their genetic material (RNA viruses). We are especially interested in the group of viruses that includes dengue fever virus and West Nile virus. We want to learn more about how human cells detect viruses that invade them (innate immune responses), and how the genetic information in RNA viruses is converted to protein (translational control of gene regulation). We also work with engineers to build rapid diagnostic devices to detect dangerous viruses in the field. My teaching is primarily at Harvard Medical School, where I teach Virology to graduate students
