Laurie Emerson Email & Phone Number | About 5 years ago I read a book by Kim Kiyosaki (wife of the well-known author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, Robert Kiyosaki) entitled “Rich Woman”. It’s a book about investing for women. On the back cover she listed some eye-opening statistics: • 47% of women over the age of 50 are single. • 50% of marriages end in divorce (The #1 thing couples fight about is money.) • In the first year after a divorce, a woman’s standard of living drops an average of 73%. • Of the elderly living in poverty, three out of four are women, yet 80% of these women were not poor when their husbands were alive. • 90% of all women will be solely responsible for their financial well-being within their lifetime. Sadly, these statistics have not improved since 2006 when Kim wrote her book. Here are some recent statistics I’ve dug up: • According to a recent survey, two-thirds of women in the U.S. are financially illiterate. • About a third of women lack basic knowledge of financial literacy, including how to manage their finances, create a budget, and save for retirement. • Women are more likely than men to make investment decisions based on emotions rather than facts. • The lack of financial literacy among women is a major factor in the gender wage gap. • Women are more likely to take on debt and have difficulty managing it, leading to higher levels of financial stress. • Women are more likely to be taken advantage of by financial institutions and predatory lenders. This is why I have made it my mission to help as many women as I can to find the way to financial literacy so they can take control of their lives and not fear the future. I don’t have all the answers, and I still have a lot to learn, but I promise to share every bit of financial knowledge I can in the hopes that it will help another woman take control of her life and avert financial disaster.
