Lauren Deutsch Email & Phone Number | I started out with a Russian major, became a preschool ESL teacher, and am now looking into museum work. While seemingly random, my life has always been consumed with an appreciation for old things and showing them to new people. Whether telling a friend about a Dostoevsky novel or teaching six-year-olds about the Maya, I love learning if only to share it with someone. While teaching preschool, I lead an afterschool class called Civilization, basically a history class for children too young to comprehend the idea of the past. In fact, one child thought I was just making it up, which was a huge compliment to her perception of my imagination. After 9 months of having Civilization for two hours twice a week, I thought about how I could turn that into a job. Hence my decision to go into to museum work. Not only museums but heritage sites in general, as I loved anything old and beautiful. I then went and did my Masters in Heritage Management in Bath, England. I had always wanted to live there, and I thought what would be a better place to study Heritage then from where museums evolved. I then moved back to US to being working in museums. I have since worked at George Washington's Mount Vernon and the College Park Aviation museum. My goal is to create museum programming and experiences that will stretch children to gain critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills to make a more educated society. I am also dedicated to teaching inclusive stories that challenge children to identify with and value all people and their experiences, so that we also have a more empathetic population in the future. I am also extraordinarily interested in historical fashion and am looking to gain experience working with textiles in a museum setting. Specific interests include- 18th-century Russian history literature, 18th-century British literature (especially Jane Austen), historical fashion, organizational practices (truly), LGBTQ issues, diversity iniatives, British comedy, Harry Potter, and cats.
