Laura Markey Email & Phone Number | Throughout my research career I have been interested in investigating the relationship between the host and the microbiota- how does this relationship begin? How is it maintained? How does it change over time, or in response to changes in the host or environment? As an undergraduate researcher at Northwestern, I worked in Dr. Mark Mandel's lab to answer some of these questions using the Hawaiian Bobtail Squid- Vibrio fischeri model and classic bacterial genetics techniques. During my doctoral research at Tufts University, in Dr. Carol Kumamoto's lab I used a mouse model of gastrointestinal colonization with the fungus C. albicans to investigate how a microbe in the GI tract could alter host health systemically, including the gut-brain axis. As a postdoctoral researcher at MIT I am using a mouse model of skin barrier damage to probe how commensal microbes can affect skin health and the healing process.
