Laura Hodgson is a Experienced in researching housing and economic development, I connect academic research with government policy makers to benefit communities. As Principal Economic Advisor at the City of Adelaide I provide economic, strategic and policy advice and research across council. Current projects include the development of an economic strategy, greening the economy, improving Adelaide’s night time economy, housing and residential growth and contributing to Council’s City Plan. While at the City of Adelaide I have delivered the City’s new Housing Strategy - Investing in Our Housing Future and draft Economic Development Strategy. I am active in economic networks, as Deputy Chair of the SA branch of Economic Development Australia and Director of Mentoring with the SA Women in Economics Network. I have current entrepreneurial and small business experience as a yoga teacher and business mentor and a member of the Victor Harbor Horse Tram’s Audit Committee. I am a former member of the Australian Defence Force. My PhD research examined the impact of Airbnb on metropolitan and non-metropolitan housing markets in Australia. I considered the contemporary, globalised economy from which Airbnb has emerged. Using quantitative and qualitative methods my research focused on the economic implications of Airbnb for local government and other stakeholders in both a global city and a regional community. I have presented my academic research at the National Planning Congress, Australian Local Government National General Assembly, as well as at academic conferences.
